| Okay, so you know the skit where Seinfeld discusses the various
approaches men use to get women's attention? He goes on about how
you know a guy has run out of ideas when he honks his car horn at a
woman. He has no suave words or sexy good looks to throw her
way... he can't think of anything... but, thinking she is hot, he
cannot let her simply pass... so he honks. Well, I recently had a
somewhat similar... all be it, "gone terribly wrong"... experience with
one, my college co-heart, Katy O'Neal.
Setting: Undisclosed office supply store
Hitter: Redheaded, blond eyebrowed (and might I add smitten) sales boy (SSB for short)
Hittee: Long-legged, beautiful blond (aka Katy)
So imagine Katy's quiet, sweet little sister walking around undisclosed
office supply store with Katy and myself as we act, as usual,
ridiculously silly. We stand anxiously in a line behind old
people (well they were!) who have decided to purchase a particular
printer, but opted to wait until in the checkout line to ask every
concievable question about said printer.
Enter Ashley and Katy's snide remarks, unnecessary giggles, and occasional sighs
Seeing the beautiful Katy (with locks of gold and laughing...
flirtatiously?) in dismay, Smitten Sales Boy charges to the rescue
claiming that he "can check her out" (boy can he! nudge nudge, wink wink).
Katy, Patricia, and I walk towards his checkout stand rejoicing because
we have avoided the old people block, and Katy and Patricia proceed to
pay for their paper and printer cartridges. As luck would have
it, Katy and Patricia have chosen the exact same paper and
cartridges. Also as luck would have it, Smitten Sales Boy picks
up on how similar they look (they must be sisters!) as well as their
purchasing of the same cartridges and paper. And so the pathetic
attempt to be cute begins. Let's watch as it unfolds!
SSB: So, ya'll have, like, the same printer?
Katy: No, but they require the same cartridges.
SSB: Wow... and ya'll just
happen to use the same amount of paper and ink at the exact same
time? You have the same ink regimen?
Katy: Uh. looks annoyed and confused I wouldn't say that.
Ashley: giggling at SSB's unsuccessful attempt to woo Katy in his checkout stand
SSB: Are you impressed that I used the word "regimen"?
Katy: silence
Ashley: more
giggling leads to outright laughter as SSB tries harder and as Ashley
imagines SSB laying Katy across the counter and kissing her passionately
SSB: Yeah. Regimen. Probably some black guy's name. Sounds about right.
Katy, Patricia, and Ashley's jaws hit floor at racist comment. Awkward shuffling ensues.
SSB: So, here's your penny. Attempts studly smile
Katy: grabs bag, penny, and hurries through door only to set off sensors of Undisclosed office supply store
Yeeeaaaaahhhh... nothin' like a racist comment to put a girl in the
mood. Well, awkward as the situation was, I did find it
he-larious to see SSB's wooing attempts on Katy. It was also fun
to imagine Katy with a million redheaded kids... running after them to
smear sunscrean on their faces.
Anywho, boys take note. Racist comments are not the way to a girl's heart.
Chauvinistic comments are.
Much love

| So here's the dealio... life is good! Today is a beautiful
day. My friends are lovely. I have a giant test tomorrow,
but I dont mind studying for it because I am interested in what the
test is over (too bad it doesn't cover a bit more anatomy!), and this
beautiful Monday is coming on the heels of a fantastic weekend full of
family phone calls, friends, movies, chocolate, and head-band making
with Katy! Hooray!
So, here is a little story for you to pick you up (if you're down) or
just to give you another reason to love humanity. My cousin is 18
and she just graduated high school. She does not have much money
between her mother and herself. However, in order to get some
money, i.e. a job, she needed transportation. She didnt have this
key factor in the equation, though, until Saturday night.
Yesterday morning I was rather startled to wake up to her phone call to
tell me that the people of her tiiiiny church congregation (we're
talking like 30 people MAYBE) came together to provide a 2004 Toyota
Corolla for her! Isn't that amazing? I love when people do
things like that. Generosity runs rampent, whether through
something small like picking up someone's fallen book or through huge
gifts like cars. Yeah... couldn't keep that story to
myself. It's too nice! : ) And on that note, I"m off to
study!
much love,
Ash (self-proclaimed dork because I actually said I don't mind studying... but it's the truth so hooray!)
ps. Happy Birthday, Rachel and Jarin!!! Hope it is fantastic!

| What a strange mood I am in.
This is the best song ever (see "Currently Listening to"), brought to me by my friend Rachel.
It is a lay on the floor and look at the ceiling song.

| BEHOLD... she writes.
Yes, yes. It has been a while, but I am here and happy... busy
doing what Ashleys do best. I am loving this day! I took a
test in fluency this morning. It wasn't hard because I knew all
of the information... but it was difficult writing 8 essay questions
with an average of about 3 subpoints each within the 50 minute class
period. Such is life, though, and I think it'll turn out well : )
So I was walking back from class just now and I began thinking about
identity. Freshman year in my honors class, we discussed how to
define oneself. Now, when I say "define oneself", I don't mean
find your nitch or figure out something to set you apart from the
crowd... spread your wings and learn how to fly all Kelly
Clarkson-style. I mean how does one view himself/herself.
Like... in relation to what/who/when/etc. I don't really
understand people who define themselves in relation to other
people. I mean, yeah... I am Heather's sister... Candace's best
friend... the President's confidant. But if I were to define
myself, I wouldn't use such terms. I guess I define myself by
what I do. I am a person who listens to lots of music... who
enjoys seeking knowledge... who eats the same thing every day and likes
it. I prefer to define myself in such a way. I also prefer
to not define myself based on others... because other people are not
constants. If I rely on another person to make me happy, I am
entirely dependent upon their mood. Rather unreliable, no?
I always know where I stand, though, in relation to what I do. I
know when I have tests to study for. I know what music will make
me in what moods. I know when the President expects a wise word
from me (speak into the plant, Katy). And so, as I continued to
walk back to the dorms, I decided that this is why I don't find it so
hard to be happy and also why I enjoy a schedule. I know where I
stand in relation to things. Something isn't likely to come up
out of nowhere and scare the living day lights out of me. I know
what is expected of me, what to expect, and I find a lot of joy in that
predictability. Even in situations that don't make me so happy...
I still know what to expect from those situations. I know what I
can expect my dad to say about a sunny day. I know what cleaning
out the drain entails. No big surprises even if it's not the most
pleasant thing.
Anyway, I'm off to do something rather predictable: write my
thesis! yay! Hope you're having a lovely one... this
weather is amazing : )
Much love,
Ashley (clown to the left of you... joker to your right)
